Why Is My Sago Palm Turning Yellow?
Location, lack of sunlight, and nutrition are the three most common causes of a yellowing sago palm. With that being said, these trees can thrive on both the east and west coasts. Let’s take a quick look at what can cause these trees to yellow over time.
1. Overwatering
The best watering pattern and amount for each and every tree can be difficult to pinpoint. Incorrect watering happens to be one of the biggest causes of a yellowing sago palm.
While some homeowners may choose to keep their trees indoors, they do much better outdoors. Make sure the sago palms have good drainage and refrain from leaving them in standing water, as this could cause some yellowing.
2. Lack Of Sunlight
Bright, indirect sunlight provides the perfect setting for sago palms to grow. Homeowners should set their container in a location that receives full sun and partial shade. In this setting, yellowing leaves can become green again.
Other methods can work if you can’t find an ideal location for your palm. For example, artificial LED lighting can be turned on 24/7 to help keep the leaves green.
3. Magnesium Deficiency
Knowing the exact soil type and acidity levels gives the palm the best chance possible to grow and thrive. Magnesium deficiency can create some color changes, however.
It’s always wise to use a slow-release fertilizer but make sure never to overdo it. An excess of fertilizer could ultimately cause the leaves to yellow.
4. Acclimation Time
Sago palms, like most trees, prefer not to be disturbed. This means something as simple as moving the palm slightly can result in some acclimation time. At this time, you may notice some yellowing developing.
The green color should be restored as long as the roots are reestablished. It’s always best to slowly introduce your plants to new environments.
5. Cold Spells
Sago palms consistently do better in warmer climates. They are not immune to cold spells, though. This sensation can occur when the roots seize upward, making it harder for the palms to absorb their necessary nutrition.
The remedy is to simply refrain from panicking when this happens. Continue to take good care of your palm tree and the leaves should return to their green coloring soon.
